Sunny Tripower Hybrid X
Important information for commissioning the Sunny Tripower Hybrid X
Conclusion
Before initial commissioning:
Update apps
Check and update firmware versions
Note special features for SMA eCharger, backup power operation or Sunny Home Manager
Perform system commissioning on the designated System Manager
This ensures that your system with the Sunny Tripower Hybrid X is set up in accordance with the current specifications.
Initial installation with new devices
Important information about the Sunny Tripower Hybrid X
When using SMA Home Storage, a standard patch cable can be used. When using a BYD Battery-Box, make sure the pin assignment is correct. Please refer to the wiring information and approved firmware versions in the document SUNNY TRIPOWER HYBRID X. If the wiring or firmware version is incorrect, the inverter displays a battery communication error. The battery may still be detected, but it will not charge or discharge.
When configuring an active power limitation, do NOT select “Phase-exact zero active power feed-in.” This is not required even if zero feed-in is specified and currently causes the inverter to enter an unintended restart loop. See: Sunny Tripower Hybrid X: Known software issue.
The active power limitation can be configured conveniently via remote access in Sunny Portal powered by ennexOS. Select the system’s System Manager, select Configuration, then Parameters – System Manager. Depending on your requirements, activate the parameter “Manually set active power setpoint in W” and configure the “Active power limitation in P.” Alternatively, for a percentage-based setpoint, activate “Manual active power setpoint in %” and configure the “Manually set active power setpoint in %.”
The minimum inverter firmware version required for stable operation as a PV-only inverter is 03.17.94.R.

Basic system with Sunny Tripower Hybrid X and battery
Commissioning of new systems can be carried out conveniently via the SMA 360° App (Setup > Commissioning). For system extensions, use the commissioning assistant in the inverter’s local user interface.
For commissioning, SMA 360° App version 3.0.x or later or SMA Energy App version 1.33.x or later is required. The latest versions are available from the respective app stores.
If there are several inverters in the system, system commissioning should be carried out on the device that is to act as the System Manager. The Sunny Tripower Hybrid X is recommended for this purpose.
SMA Energy Maximizer
The new energy management system can be activated via the SMA 360° App, the SMA Energy App or Sunny Portal.
The 90-day free trial period for SMA Premium can then be started.
Systems with SMA eCharger
For systems with SMA eCharger, the SMA eCharger must be updated to firmware version 2.7 using the SMA 360° App before commissioning the Sunny Tripower Hybrid X.
Carry out the subsequent system commissioning in the SMA 360° App on the device that is to act as the System Manager. The Sunny Tripower Hybrid X is recommended as the System Manager.
Systems with backup power operation
The SMA Energy Meter must be installed on the grid side upstream of the Backup Box because, in systems with the Sunny Tripower Hybrid X, it detects the restoration of the utility grid after a grid outage.
During initial commissioning, update the inverter to the latest firmware so that the rotating field of the customer system is detected correctly and the requirements for backup operation are met.
If there are several Sunny Tripower Hybrid X inverters in the system, the Backup Box must be connected to the inverter that acts as the System Manager.
If the household grid is disconnected when testing the backup power function but the Sunny Tripower Hybrid X does not provide voltage at the AC output terminals, the SPS_In wiring is likely incorrect. In this case, check the correct pin assignment and inspect the cable used for damage.
Currently, it is not possible to configure the backup reserve in the SMA 360° App on iOS. It can be configured in the SMA Energy App or in Sunny Portal powered by ennexOS.
Systems connected to a smart meter gateway (§ 14a EnWG / § 9 EEG) – only for Germany
Additional settings are required to configure EEBUS communication with the grid operator’s control box.
Please refer to the corresponding technical documentation (DE only).
Systems with Sunny Home Manager
Important: Backup operation is not supported in conjunction with the Sunny Home Manager. For applications with backup power operation, use the Sunny Tripower Hybrid X as the System Manager.
Installation in existing systems
Conversion of a Sunny Home Manager system
Additional steps are required when converting an existing Sunny Home Manager system to a system with an integrated System Manager using SMA Energy Maximizer or SMA Energy Planner.
Please refer to the corresponding technical documentation.
Using an existing SMA eCharger
Note: The following steps are not required if the system will continue to operate as a Sunny Home Manager system.
If you continue using an existing SMA eCharger, please follow the procedure below:
Before performing the factory reset, you can save relevant settings, such as registered RFID cards, using the backup file (Menu: Configuration > Update and Backup) and restore them afterward. Logs of charging sessions associated with RFID cards must be backed up separately via the Event Monitor.
Update the SMA eCharger to the required firmware version.
After the firmware update, reset the SMA eCharger to its factory settings using the integrated user interface.
Then start system commissioning on the designated System Manager.
