High Self-Consumption with Small PV Systems: SMA Launches Sunny Boy 1.5/2.5

SMA Solar Technology AG (SMA) launches the Sunny Boy 1.5/2.5*. The new Sunny Boy is the perfect inverter for customers who want to take full advantage of their small photovoltaic systems. Among other features, it supports a high rate of self-consumption, has a wide range of applications and is very easy to integrate into a home network. In addition, its innovative design, broad input voltage range of 80 V to 600 V and new communication concept offer numerous advantages during installation and commissioning. Thanks to direct communication with the SMA Energy Meter, both limitation to 70 percent, which is required in Germany, and limitation to 0 percent is possible.

The perfect inverter for small PV systems
With the Sunny Boy 1.5/2.5, SMA offers an inverter, which follows the current trend toward small PV systems in terms of technology. After all, small PV systems are particularly cost-effective due to lower investment costs and a high self-consumption rate. In addition, the new Sunny Boy is attractively priced. “Many people have a small roof area or want to spend a small amount of money for their PV systems,” said Dieter Manz, Product Manager at SMA. “For them, the new Sunny Boy is the perfect solution.”

Simple and fast installation
The innovative design of the Sunny Boy 1.5/2.5 is not only easy to install, but also allows for quick DC and AC connections via plug and play. For example, because it weighs just 9 kg it can be suspended from just two screws, with no additional wall mounting bracket. Commissioning is equally easy. “Through the integrated intuitive user interface, it is possible to choose the necessary settings wirelessly in next to no time—without having to open the enclosure,” said Product Manager Manz.

Communication via an innovative user interface
Even when it comes to communication, the Sunny Boy 1.5/2.5 presents an innovation: The product engineers have translocated the entire display operation to mobile devices and PC. “The integrated user interface makes it possible to monitor system data on any smartphone or tablet,” explained Manz. Users can choose between local and online monitoring via Sunny Places and Sunny Portal.

*The Sunny Boy 1.5/2.5 will be available from mid-April 2015 in Germany, Austria, France, Portugal, Spain, Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands and UK, in addition from the beginning of May in Australia. Gradual rollout in additional countries, except in the U.S. and Japan, will follow depending on certifications.
