In November 2015, SMA will deliver 24 Sunny Central Storage 1000 battery inverters to Korea. They include the necessary system technology for integrating the batteries. The SMA inverters will be used with large lithium-ion batteries from a leading Korean manufacturer to supply 24 MW of power conditioning output. The entire system will then be qualified during a test operation scheduled for a six-month period.
“The selection of SMA as the only foreign manufacturer on this project, which is so important for the Korean electricity supply, is a great success for us and our Korean partner BOSUNG Powertec Co. Ltd., who will install the Sunny Central Storage battery inverters on-site,” said Myoung-Bae Lee, General Manager of SMA Korea, after the signing of the contract.
Supplying reserve power is of particular importance in Korea. Because of the country’s island location and its border with neighboring North Korea, it is not possible to import the balancing power needed to stabilize utility grids the way it is done in other countries. The power must therefore be generated and supplied within the country itself. KEPCO (Korea Electric Power Corporation) has announced that in the coming years it will issue invitations to bid on additional portions of frequency regulation projects, each with 200 MW that will be used to supply reserve power for grid stabilization. This is intended to guarantee long-term reliability of the Korean utility grid.
“With on-grid storage systems, the Sunny Central Storage battery inverters provide a full range of grid management services such as frequency control or grid congestion management,” explained Volker Wachenfeld, Executive Vice President Off-Grid and Storage at SMA. “This reduces ongoing reserve power capacities and ensures grid stability. Integration of large-scale storage systems and Sunny Central Storage battery inverters to supply reserve power to utility grids thus supports continuous expansion of renewable energies worldwide.”
