Making the most of solar power and keeping track of it at all times
The PV system on the roof of the Seeger family home is currently producing a steady flow of electricity. Marek Seeger looks at the SMA Energy app on his smartphone to check the state of charge of his electric car. It’s ready to go, so he can take the children to their sports club. The laundry and the dishes have already been washed, too – all thanks to solar power.
Power, heat, transportation – in the Seeger household, everything is electrified. The Seegers use the solar power generated during the day to run their electrical home appliances and to provide heat and hot water via a heat pump, as well as to charge their electric car. In the evenings, or when sunshine is in short supply, the electricity comes from their battery-storage system.

It was always the plan to optimize the generation of solar power at all times of day, even when the house was still being built. The east/west orientation of the roof means that the sun shines on the PV modules from dawn to dusk. The family deliberately chose not to include extras such as a chimney or a satellite dish so as not to cast shadows on the PV modules.
The smart energy management system in the Seeger household knows exactly how much electricity their PV system is generating, how much energy the home appliances are currently demanding and when it is necessary to obtain electricity from the utility grid. The Sunny Home Manager 2.0 manages the flow of energy in the home in such a way that the solar power is used to its full potential at all times and visualizes it through the Sunny Portal monitoring tool and in the SMA Energy app. That means the Seegers can easily view the data for their PV system whenever they want. This allows them to cut their energy costs by as much as 80 percent.
