Selling your solar power directly – what does it mean?
In Germany, PV system operators with a system power of 100 kWp or more have to market surplus electricity directly according to the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG). This means that the electricity is no longer sold at fixed feed-in tariffs but must be traded on the open electricity market. This electricity is sold either to large-scale buyers or through the electricity exchange at market prices. This allows you to generate additional income.
With SMA SPOT, you can easily enjoy the benefits of this additional income.*
*Please note: SMA SPOT can currently only be used for new systems that are still in the planning or construction phase. Unfortunately, SMA SPOT is not available for existing systems.
How does direct selling of solar power work?
A standard model for direct selling is the market premium scheme, which is incorporated in the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG). System operators sell their electricity directly on the power exchange or through direct selling services like SMA SPOT. These services handle the trading of your surplus electricity and ensure full compliance with all legal requirements. In addition to the revenues from the sale of electricity, solar power producers often receive a market premium from the grid operator. This compensates for the difference between the average stock price and a legally stipulated remuneration (investable value). The market bonus scheme is intended to incentivize market-oriented power generation and promote the integration of renewable energies into the electricity market.
How direct selling works with SMA SPOT:
Instead of supplying your excess electricity to the grid operator at a fixed feed-in tariff, SMA SPOT takes over trading on the power exchange for you, ensuring optimal feed-in tariffs. You only pay a monthly marketing fee, the amount of which depends on various factors.*
*For more information on how the fees are calculated, please feel free to contact us.
1. Market monitoring
SMA SPOT monitors the electricity rates on the EPEX SPOT power exchange and decides when and how much electricity is sold.
2. Contract management
SMA SPOT enters into agreements with the purchasers, ensuring compliance with legal requirements.
3. Electricity sales
SMA SPOT sells your surplus PV power on the EPEX power exchange at the best possible prices.
4. Billing & feed-in tariffs
You receive your payment – SMA SPOT pays you for the electricity delivered according to the hourly contracts of the day-ahead auction. In addition, you receive a market premium from the grid operator.
The technical prerequisites for direct selling with SMA SPOT
To use SMA SPOT, you need the following components:
A PV system with an SMA PV inverter or an SMA hybrid inverter.
SMA Data Manager powered by ennexOS.
Your path to direct selling success with SMA SPOT

Planning and contract preparation by the PV professional company
Your PV professional company plans the PV system using Sunny Design, SMA’s online planning tool, which can automatically generate a contractual offer for the direct selling of your PV power with SMA SPOT.
Contract conclusion and purchase
If you order the planned system, you also sign the direct selling contract and send it to coneva.
Installation and commissioning
The installation company will implement the system with perfectly coordinated SMA technology and commission it.
Activation and compensation
SMA SPOT is activated with your contract number, and your PV power is traded on the power exchange. You receive the revenues generated from trading power as well as the market premium.

Frequently asked questions about direct selling and SMA SPOT
Is there a direct selling obligation for solar power?
If you operate a PV system with a capacity of more than 100 kWp that was commissioned after January 1, 2016, you must directly sell the electricity generated. This requirement has applied to systems over 500 kWp since August 1, 2014. Due to country-specific deviations, SMA SPOT is currently only offered in Germany.
What happens if I do not comply with the direct selling obligation?
For a nominal system power of 100 kWp or more, you as a PV system operator are obligated to directly sell your electricity. Anyone who fails to comply with this obligation risks sanctions. SMA SPOT helps you easily comply with this obligation and increase your yields at the same time.
Can I sell solar power directly?
Yes, you can sell solar power directly. In order to do so, certain requirements must be met. Currently, direct selling for PV systems is compulsory in Germany for systems with an installed power of 100 kWp and above.
What is the electricity price with direct selling?
The electricity rate depends on current stock prices and market conditions. Thus, it may fluctuate and is usually higher than the fixed feed-in tariff.
What conditions must be fulfilled for selling solar power yourself?
In order for a PV system to be used for direct selling, the following conditions must be met:
A new PV system with a power between 100 and 1,000 kWp (for PV rooftop systems up to 750 kWp) with SMA inverter and SMA Data Manager M.
Registering load profile measurement (RLM energy meter).
The PV system must be capable of remote control via SMA SPOT.
A grid connection approval by the grid operator must be available.
What are the benefits of direct selling in the market premium scheme?
As a PV system operator, you receive a compensation from SMA SPOT for the electricity sold on the EPEX SPOT power exchange and are paid a market premium by the grid operator in accordance with the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG).
Who is behind SMA SPOT?
SMA SPOT is a direct selling service offered by SMA and our subsidiary company coneva. As a subsidiary of SMA, coneva has the necessary expertise for intelligent, local energy management. Together, we offer you integrated energy management to help you make the most of your solar power.
How is the compensation of traded solar power calculated?
SMA SPOT pays for the supplied solar power based on the prices of the hourly contracts from the day-ahead auction on the EPEX SPOT power exchange. The resulting electricity revenues are billed separately. For this, customers receive two documents: a credit note detailing the electricity revenues and an invoice for the agreed marketing fee.
How high is the market premium?
The market premium is calculated as "investable value" minus "market value solar".
The Federal Network Agency determines the "investable value" and publishes it on its website.
The transmission grid operators calculate the "market value solar" monthly and publish it on nhetztranparenz.de.
Why is the compensation based on the stock price and not on the market value solar?
Since the market value solar is based on the average of all PV systems in Germany, the compensation for individual systems might be inaccurate. A PV system that feeds all its power into the grid often receives too little compensation whereas a PV system that feeds part of its power into the grid receives too much compensation. SMA SPOT relies on fair compensation based on real yields on the power exchange and passes the revenue on to the operators without costs or risk premiums. The risk for balancing energy costs is assumed by SMA SPOT.
What happens when electricity prices are negative?
If the electricity price is negative, your system's grid feed-in quota is reduced to prevent losses.
What does SMA SPOT cost?
The costs for SMA SPOT depend on the size of your PV system and the amount of electricity fed in. A marketing fee is charged, which is agreed upon individually.
When does the direct selling start?
If the contract is signed no later than 10 business days before the end of the month, direct selling will start on the 1st of the month after next.
When will the grid operator limit the grid feed-in?
In the event of utility grid bottlenecks (redispatch measures).
What compensation is available in the event of a curtailment?
If feed-in is curtailed, the feed-in tariff will depend on the reason for the curtailment:
If curtailment occurs for market reasons (e.g., due to negative stock prices), no compensation will be paid.
If curtailment is carried out by the grid operator as part of a redispatch, financial compensation may be paid - unless negative stock prices were in effect at the time of the curtailment.
How is the compensation paid in the event of a curtailment by the grid operator?
The calculation is made in accordance with a standard procedure and is credited monthly.
