Joint press release by SMA, SMA Altenso and re:cap SMA Altenso to realize first 220MWh battery energy storage project in Finland Niestetal, 23 April 2026 – Finland is emerging as a key market for advanced energy storage solutions, driven by a rapid expansion of renewable energies, increasing power price volatility, and rising grid stability requirements. Building on its strong engineering track record and extensive project development and delivery experience, SMA Altenso (Altenso) is entering this promising market to deliver efficient and investor-ready solutions. A first battery energy storage system (BESS) with the capacity of 95 MW and 220 MWh will be realized in Alapitkä, in the municipality of Lapinlahti, Finland. The so-called Battery Park Alapitkä is a stand-alone, ready-to-build, utility-scale BESS project developed entirely by Altenso in collaboration with its local partner Infinergies Finland Oy. BESS play a strategic role in Finland’s energy transformation. Altenso’s project therefore fully aligns with the Finnish Government’s recently submitted national Energy and Climate Strategy, targeting an acceleration of the clean energy transition, and ensuring compliance with both the EU 2030 climate and energy targets as well as the national Climate Act. Furthermore, Fingrid’s storage strategy to include grid-forming requirements for enhanced system stability directly builds on Altenso’s core know-how. Altenso transfers Battery Park Alapitkä to re:cap In this context, the global greentech investor re:cap has reached an agreement to fully acquire Altenso’s Battery Park Alapitkä on behalf of the FP Lux European Battery Storage fund. By this move, re:cap strengthens its position in the rapidly expanding European BESS market, benefiting from its involvement in this high-growth sector from an early stage. The partnership with SMA Altenso combines complementary expertise and resources, enabling the effective realization of this strategic project. Enrique Garralagas Rojas, Managing Director of SMA Altenso: “With re:cap we have gained an investor with a clear focus on renewable energy and proven expertise in BESS assets. We are confident that our joint project will be beneficial for all parties involved as well as for the transformation of Finland’s energy ecosystem.” Thomas Seibel, CEO of re:cap: “We are excited to partner with SMA Altenso on this transformative project. Their engineering excellence and commitment to innovative energy solutions have been instrumental in bringing the Battery Park Alapitkä to fruition. We greatly value the trust that Altenso has placed in us, and we are confident that our collaboration will make a significant contribution to Finland's clean energy future.” Enhanced system efficiency and reliability with SMA technology Battery Park Alapitkä sets new technological standards using advanced grid-forming inverter technologies by SMA to ensure reliable system operation and stable energy performance under demanding conditions. The Sunny Central Storage UP-S battery storage inverters, delivering power conversion efficiency through its innovative use of SiC Mosfet semiconductors, combine high performance, operational reliability, and efficiency while fully complying with applicable cybersecurity standards. The inverters are mounted on a Medium Voltage Power Station in a 40-ft configuration, giving EPCs and project developers double the power in a single turnkey unit, simplifying the system design and installation. Battery Park Alaptikä to be operational by 2027 Altenso co-developed the project with Infinergies Finland Oy and will execute the full EPC scope, managing balance of plant, medium to-high voltage construction and grid integration. With construction expected to begin in spring 2026, the Battery Park Alapitkä is scheduled for operation in 2027. The BESS project will provide frequency response services and participate in the day-ahead and intraday electricity markets. This project marks a milestone for Altenso‘s business expansion and development pipeline with the target of realizing further projects to actively support the government’s energy and climate strategy.
